27th August 2005 - Cowal Championships, Dunoon
With just a couple of minor competitions remaining, today's competition at Dunoon brings another season of championships to a close. The novice band followed up their great form at the Melrose competition by winning 3rd place in the N/J competition at Cowal. With consistent marks from all judges, it was a great reward in a "major". Well done!

The Juvenile band placed 7th overall in their section, although they themselves, and most folks listening thought they played really well.

The Grade 1 band finished their season with a really strong performance, ending up 3rd overall in Grade 1 - their best result of the season.

Alan and John ended up 2nd and 1st respectively in their Drum Major events. This win, and his associated 15th Champion of Champion win, marks the end of an incredibly succesful D/M career for John as he announced his retirement from competing after Saturday's event. Everyone in the band would like to congratulate John on his colossal achievements, thank him for the years he has ably represented the band and wish him all the best in whatever he chooses to fill his future Saturdays with!

22nd August 2005 - Mid August Update
The World Championship brought some mixed results for the bands. The Novice band came in 12th in their grade, the Juveniles a creditable 5th place in a strong field and the Grade 1 band came in a disappointing 8th overall. Lastly John brought home 1st place in the adult Drum Major's contest while Alan did not attend as he was on vacation.

At the Melrose competition on 20th August, the Novice Juveniles had a breakthough moment winning their competition with a 1st in piping and a 2nd place in drumming, beating local rivals George Watson's College into second place overall. A really encouraging result and reward for a lot of hard work by the kids and tutors alike. The Juvenile band had a more challenging time with 5th place in the grade 3 contest and 7th in grade 2.

6th August 2005 - Branch Championship, North Berwick
The Boghall contingent had a very successful day at the Branch Championship at North Berwick today. On a strange day where sun and rain swapped throughout the day, all the bands came up with great performances and great results.

The Novice Juvenile band came in 3rd place in both the Open and Confined (branch) competitions, tied for 2nd place in piping. The Juvenile band had a cracking day with a 1st place in the Open and Confined competitions - their first win in around 2 years and a good victory over their strong branch rivals George Watson's College. Well done and give us some more guys!

The Grade 1 band gave a strong Medley performance too and placed 1st from all 4 judges - a good confidence builder going into next weeks World Championship.

Lastly both Allan and John won their respective events in the Drum Major competitions in both the Open and Confined sections.

2nd August 2005 - Boghall Medley Article
PM Ross Walker recently contributed an article on the band's medley that will be played at this years World Championship. An exerpt is included here for your interest...

"Constructing a new medley for Grade one competition is possibly one of the most challenging tasks that bands face. Successful medleys possess a certain something that manages to catch the imagination of the judge, crowd and bandsmen alike. People can wax lyrical about the intricacies of medley construction however there isn't really a "cook book" to follow; you may have great tunes, great arrangements but you need a certain magic to make a good medley into a great one. Having spoken to previous World Champion Pipe Majors from yesteryear, they echoed these views - one in particular said that he only felt he constructed three medleys that really hit the mark in a 20-year period!

I think it is important for a memorable medley to have some recognisable material to give the listener some reference points. Our most successful and popular medleys have included some classic tunes that most people know, from The Mason's Apron and The Banjo Breakdown, albeit arranged in a way suitable for modern competition. The competition medley might only be performed once in a year so it's important that the listener can make sense of what's happening as it happens - almost knowing what's coming before it's actually played.

One other key consideration is that the material must be chosen to exploit the particular strengths of the band. Ensemble has been acknowledged as one of Boghall's hallmarks for the last 25 years and this has been developed though a close partnership between the Pipe Major and Leading Drummer. That tradition is continued today with Gordon Brown and I working closely from the outset in the medley construction. Gordon's ability to write musical and sympathetic scores is underpinned by choosing tunes that suit our style - I've thrown out more good tunes than I care to remember because they didn't quite hit the mark from an ensemble perspective.

The medley that Gordon and I have constructed and will play at this year's World Championship contains a combination of modern compositions and some classic material. It begins with a 9/8 march called Bathgate Highland Games. This tune that was composed for the band by Bob Abbot in the early '80s however we never played it as a band. The music lay in a box for about 15 years until I stumbled across it in the late 1990's. With its majestic melody and sympathetic harmony, it has proved to be one of our most popular tunes.

Rather than follow the trend of constructing an elaborate bridge, we transition into the body of the medley with an aggressive rhythmical jig called The Hills of Kazakstan delivering a real punch in the face after the 9/8 opener. Donald MacLeod's arrangement of the traditional Ten Penny Bit takes us into Don Bradford's beautiful air The Call To the Gathering.

Don composed this tune whilst attending the funeral of his close friend and ex-Pipe Major Harry MacAleer. It has a unique haunting theme and the accompaniment that Gordon has written for it amplifies the effect.

Following on from the air, the traditional Dora Macleod is one of the more technical strathspeys and is a real test of any band's technique. We finish the medley with a couple of reels - the first is a tune written by an ex-band member Fraser Martin called Walking the Surf that sets the performance up for an toe-tapping finish with an arrangement of the Crossing the Minch.

The medley running order is:
  1. Bathgate Highland Games (9/8 march) Bob Abbot
  2. The Hills of Kazakstan (jig) Ivan Drever
  3. The Ten Penny Bit (jig) trad, arr Donald MacLeod
  4. The Call to the Gathering (air) Don Bradford
  5. Dora MacLeod (strath) Donald MacLeod
  6. Walking the Surf (reel) Fraser Martin
  7. Crossing the Minch (reel) Donald MacLeod
In summary, it flows well, has really strong melodic tunes with some interesting contrasts and crucially we really are getting a real buzz from playing it. Time will tell if it's filed under the "belter" category or not."

30th July 2005 - Mixed day at Tain
The bands had mixed fortunes at the British Championships in Tain this weekend. The Novice band had a great result with 6th place out of 14 bands - great stuff from the kids. The Juvenile band gained 4th place in their grade with a couple of 3rd places for piping. Again, really solid result showing continued improvement.

The Grade 1 band had a less than successful day with a wide spread of marks from the judges culminating in 8th position overall. Admittedly, the guys felt that they left their best performance on the tuning park rather than in the competition proper, so frustration was the order of the day.

John and Allan continued their string of good results with each of them coming in 2nd place in their respective sections.
The bands will make their next appearance at the Lothian & Borders branch championship at North Berwick on Saturday 6th August, the last contest before the World Championship the following week.

22nd July 2005 - Pictures from BBQ posted
Some pictures from the band's recent practice day and BBQ at Beecraigs Country Park are now available at this link .

25th June 2005 - Euros at Banbridge
All bands performed extremely well at the European Championships at Banbridge N.I. with Novice Juveniles 6th, Juveniles 4th and the Grade 1 band 5th in their respective grades. Allan Morton managed to win 3rd place in the Juvenile D/M competition however John Noble failed to reach the final of the adult D/M section in a notoriously challenging competition venue.

All Boghall bands came away with mixed feelings from the competition having hoped for higher placings after giving great performances, however the continual improvement in performances confirms that future results should be worth waiting for.

Finally after some delay in finding fitting material, we've managed to get some pictures of the Grade 1 band performing in Russia in September. Click on the link to view.

18th June 2005 - BBQ Mayhem
A great time was had by all bandsfolk at the very successful practice day / BBQ at Beecraig's Country Park on 18th June. As well as productive practice time, it gave everyone connected with the band an opportunity to spend some more relaxing time in each other's company away from the hurly-burly of competition days.Such was the day's success it is anticipated that it may become an annual event.

A big thank you goes to the committee who organised the day and in particular to Colin and Mike who perspired all day at the grill to keep everyone fed. Thanks also goes to the bright spark who organised the sponge throwing - a great idea but not so clever for those who had to take a turn in the stocks!

Picture of the day will appear here as soon as they turn up - the printable ones that is!

12th June 2005 - Solo highlights
In our "gala-day" season, some of the young and not so young guys take the opportunity to compete at some of the solo piping events around the games circuit.

One of Boghall's Juveniles, Andrew Vernon, had great piping success at Strathmore Highland Games, Glamis Castle on Sunday. He placed 1st in the under 18 march and 2nd in the under 18 strathspey and reel. Those listening to the competition felt it was only a very small slip in his reel that prevented Andrew "doing the double" and taking both events. This was Andrew's maiden victory around the games and judging by the teriffic progress in his playing over the last eighteen months or so, it will no doubt be the first of many.

Boghall's Canadian contingent, Grade 1 piper Andrea Boyd had a great day at Glamis, taking 3rd and 5th in the light music and also gained 5th place in the piobaireachd while P/S Donald MacLeod was 2nd in the same event. Rounding off a good weekend, Grade 1 piper Jason Craig from Oz won the piobaireachd event at the Ardrossan Highland Games on Sunday.

Finally, all fingers and toes are crossed for some decent weather for the band's practice day and BBQ at Beecraigs Country Park on Saturday.

28th May 2005 - Damp day at Bathgate
Both Juvenile bands competed at our local Highland Games today in damp and rather miserable conditions. Disappointingly, the Grade 1 band were unable to compete here for the first time in 25 years due to no Grade 1 competition being held.

The Novice band played in reaally cold conditions in the morning and gave a really good performance despite a few numb sets of fingers! With a 4th in piping and a second place in drumming, they came in a good 3rd place.

The Juveniles played in grade 3 since there was no Juvenile competition. With two 8th places for piping and drumming, they ended up in 8th place overall - not too bad for the Juveniles playing in the adult grade. Here's hoping for an improvement in the weather for Bathgate Procession on Saturday.

21st May 2005 - Solid day at Scottish Championships
The bands had a good day today at Scottish Championships in Dumbarton. All the bands performed really well with particular progress being made by both the Juvenile bands

The Novice band came a solid 8th position in their grade cementing the progress they've made over the winter and the Juveniles came in 4th, only missing out on 3rd place by an ensemble preference. The hard work done by instructors and the kids themselves can clearly be heard in the quality of their performances. More success will surely follow.

The Grade 1 band performed extremely well earning them 6th place although it could have been higher. With a 3rd and an 8th place in piping there were differing opinions on how good the performance was, however the continued progress from the disappointing season last year will surely see the band climb further up the prize list soon.

To round off the day, both Alan and John won their Drum Major events in fine style giving the band a pair of Scottish Champions for another year. Well done John, Alan and all the bandsfolk for a good day.

The Juveniles will be competing at Bathgate Highland Games next Saturday however since there is no Grade 1 competition, the senior band will not attend. After this, the civic season of local gala days, processions and parades commences with the bands next competitive event being the European Championships in Banbridge, N.I.

14th May 2005 - First outing of the season at Dunbar
All bands competed for the first time outdoors today at Dunbar Highland Games. Unusually for Dunbar, the weather was warm ans sunny all day with the occasional cold blast off the sea to remind us all that it's still early May!

The bands all performed well with the Novice Juveniles coming in 8th in their grade and the Juveniles had a strong 2nd place.

The Grade 1 band probably had their best performance at Dunbar for many a year with both pipes and drums sounding great, attracting many favourable comments. Unfortunately the band only managed 3rd place behind the Vale of Atholl and Strathclyde Police, however continued quality performances like this will see the band climb the prize list in the near future.

To round off the day, both John Noble and Allan Morton won their events in the Adult and Juvenile Drum Major sections respectively.

A good hard week of practice is now ahead in preparation for the Scottish Championship in Dumbarton next Saturday. See you then!

April 2005
The Juvenile bands had a successful day at the branch mini band and solo piping and drumming contest at Craigmount High School on 16th April. The Novice Juvenile band had a strong showing with a 3rd, 4th and 6th place in their event with the 3 mini bands entered. The Juveniles continued to deliver on their early promise with a 2nd and 5th in their event.

In addition to the band results, some individuals had strong results in the solo events with Graham Drummond coming in 2nd in the Slow March and March and 3rd in the Strathspey and Reel in the under 14 section. In total, 5 pipers from the Juveniles reached the finals of their respective events - great stuff!

In the under 18 sections, Grade 1 piper Cameron Drummond bagged 1st place in both the March and the Strathspey and Reel competitions. With these wins, Cameron, a recent addition to the pipe corps from Lothian & Borders Police, will represent the Lothian and Borders branch in the Willie Ferguson contest.

Not to be outdone, Juvenile drummer Craig Brown followed on from his win in last years World Solo Drumming Championship by winning the under 14 march competition. All in all, a good day's work!
