One aspect of the Boghall & Bathgate organisation of which we are extremely proud is the band's continued involvement in teaching piping and drumming to the youngsters of the local area and beyond. The organisation is world renowned for its highly successful Juvenile bands and the amount of time and effort invested by the experienced playres in tutoring the kids in both piping and drumming.

This focus on teaching stemmed from a large influx of youngsters into the band in 1976 who were really too young to compete with the band at the time. It was therefore decided to set up a junior band for these kids to compete in the Novice Juvenile grade. As time progressed, a second junior band was formed owing to the increasing number of youngsters joining the organisation, and both bands still compete today, comprising some 40-50 young people from the Bathgate and surrounding areaa.

These junior bands have been as successful as the adult bands, winning 5 World Championships between them and over 11 World Drum Corps titles. It is also interesting to note that the Grade 1 band‘s current Pipe Major Ross Walker and Leading Drummer Gordon Brown are products of this Pipe Band “academy“ having earned their spurs in the Juvenile band in the late 70‘s.

The junior bands receive tuition from members of the Grade 1 and 2 bands, in both piping and drumming. This ensures the highest quality instruction for the kids and helps to preserve the consistency in playing and style and will ensure the continuation of the Boghall legacy, nurtured by so many people, well into the future.
