40th anniversary dinner

Friday 4th May saw the band gather with members past and present, guests, friends and supporters to celebrate our 40th Anniversary with a black tie event at the Hilcroft Hotel in Whitburn. We had a great night which started with Ali Scougall piping in the top table before being treated to a number of fantastic speeches beginning with local MSP and Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop. We were all thoroughly entertained by Fiona’s speech and I think everybody was impressed by Fiona’s in depth knowledge of both the Boghall and Bathgate organisation and the pipe band world in general. It’s good to know our culture is being well looked after at the top!

Following on from Fiona’s speech we had some very entertaining speeches filled with memorable anecdotes from P/M Ross Walker, former P/M Craig Walker, ex snare and tenor drummer, Craig Turpie, L/D Gordon Brown and band president, Malcolm Swan. I think it’s fair to say that all of these speeches were very enjoyable, though all the guys assure us they were greatly restricted by the number of stories which would have been deemed appropriate for the evening!

Following the end of a three course meal, the guests were treated to a great performance from a selection of the Grade 1 band. With 9 pipers, 4 snares and a selection of the bass section, the guests got an insight into three of the concert sets for our “Forte” concert in August and also had the chance to hear our updated competition medley (Campbell’s Tartan Army) which was very well received by the audience.

The evening then continued into the wee small hours with the band members and guests socialising and recalling many great stories from a busy and successful past 40 years. Overall we had a great night and can’t wait for the season to start in the coming weeks. Here’s to another 40 years!
