Aussie Championships

The 2012 Australian Pipe Band Championships were held in Ballarat, 70 miles north-west of Melbourne over the weekend of Friday 6th – Sunday 8th April. The Championships are held on a biannual basis and as such this was the first opportunity for Boghall drummer Olav Goud to lead his City of Adelaide drum corps at a National Championship since moving to Australia in early 2011. Again we had a good overall representation of our Southern Hemisphere contingent with Scott Birrell (sporting an excellent moustache) also competing with Olav’s corps and Liam Kernaghan competing with the University of Ballarat.

Both the City of Adelaide and the University of Ballarat were competing in Grade 2 which was hotly contested this year with seven bands competing for the National title. Olav’s corps produced two very consistent performances across both MSR and Medley and with first placings in both events, they were clear winners of the Grade 2 drumming title, with the band finishing in 2nd place overall.

The University of Ballarat also produced two strong performances and were pleased to finish up 4th in what was undoubtedly a strong grade. This was also an improvement of two places from the last National Championships in 2010 and shows that the band are making good progress since their upgrading following the 2008 Nationals.

Overall it seems this was another superbly run championship and we can only hope that Olav, Scott and Liam can bring some of the good weather across with them in the summer. Finally, Libby O’Brien followed on from her “Outside the Circle” YouTube success at the New Zealand Pipe Band Championships with another excellent video – have a look and see how many well known pipe band faces you can recognise!!
