Boghall crowned Cowal Champions, Drummers win Cowal and Champion of Champions!

Boghall and Bathgate rounded off an excellent 40th anniversary season by winning the Grade 1 Cowal Pipe Band Championships from a strong field of thirteen bands. Playing second last, the band drew their Number 2 medley starting with the classic Boghall opener, The Big Road Brusher. All sections of the band had a great run and were delighted to be announced as 2012 Cowal Champions, with the drum corps also winning, thereby taking their 4th major championship of an incredibly successful season.

Despite the pouring rain, the band thoroughly enjoyed leading the parade down the street behind the famous Argyll Shield and it was great to see so many locals continuing to turn out to cheer on the bands despite the conditions. In addition, with the drummers continuing their excellent set of results, they were also crowned 2012 Champion of Champions, with the band finishing in a strong second place overall behind Field Marshal Montgomery - well done to them!

Elsewhere, the Juvenile band gained their strongest placing of the year at a major championship playing their MSR, Hugh Kennedy, Susan McLeod and The Brown Haired Maid. They were delighted to finish in 2nd place behind George Watson’s College and this is just reward for all the hard work put in by P/M Ian Bowden and all the kids and tutors over the year. Congratulations to P/M Iain Simpson and his GWC troops for their very impressive second consecutive Grand Slam.

The Novice band also had a good day and can be very pleased to make their way back into the prize list, finishing 6th out of 20 bands - well done to them.

The Grade 1 band will now look forward to building on the 2012 season in preparation for the first major of 2013 at Bathgate next May, whilst we look forward to seeing many of our drummers competing at the World Solo Drumming Championships in Glasgow in October. The Juvenile bands still have one more contest to go though - you can see them in action at the Peebles Highland Games on Sunday 9th September!
