Boghall Drummers finish 2012 on a high!

Saturday 20th October saw the pinnacle of the solo drumming calendar with both the World Solo Drumming Championships and the International Juvenile Solo Tenor Drumming Contest taking place at the Glasgow Caledonian University. Both events saw great representation from the band with a total of 20 entries across the 5 separate contests.

Starting with the Tenor Contest, the band had some fantastic results, with young Kerr McQuillan (son of Grade 1 tenor drummer Stevie) winning Juvenile section 1 in his first official contest. In Section 2 Joanna Fairbairn produced a great performance to win against some excellent competition whilst elsewhere in section 2 there were good performances from Iona Hatcher and Jennifer Tierney with Jennifer finishing in 6th place. Well done to all our tenor drummers!

In the snare drumming contests there were some strong performances in Juvenile Section 1 with Reed Cameron narrowly missing out on a prize in a very close 7th place, whilst Gavin Orr produced a very good run to finish 4th in what was ultimately a very high standard of contest in Juvenile Section 3.

In the adult sections, we were delighted to see two drummers qualify from the morning heats with Alan Irvine and Craig Brown making the semi-finals to join L/D Gordon Brown who had pre-qualified based on his results from last year. Unfortunately Gordon had not had the best preparation leading up to the contest having been admitted to hospital at the end of the season. Whilst Gordon had recovered well, he had been readmitted to hospital with a complication in the lead up to the solo drumming and was only allowed out on the day of the contest to compete. This clearly did not allow him the sort of preparation he would normally have and it is a credit to him that despite this he only narrowly missed out on the final, finishing in 7th place.

Alan had a very good run in the semi-finals too, but ultimately only Craig managed to make the final. This was Craig’s first time in the adult final which is a tremendous achievement in only his third year in the adult contest! Craig had two strong performances in the final and was delighted to finish in 9th place overall (including one third place in the MSR) - well done Craig!

Overall, it was another successful day for the drum corps in what has been a great season for them - well done to everyone involved and thanks to all the pipers, parents and supporters that helped out on the day.
