Boghall Drummers on top of the world!

After a busy week leading up to the 2012 World Pipe Band Championships, including the excellent Forte concert, all three Boghall bands were excited to finally arrive at Glasgow Green in glorious sunshine on the morning of Saturday 11th August. With the Grade 1 band in fine form off the back of winning the European Championships 2 weeks before and with the pre-World’s concert receiving some fine reviews courtesy of the College of Piping and Pipes|Drums, the band had high expectations for their own performance.

After a tightly contested morning qualifier, it became apparent that the Grade 1 band would play first in the fourteen band final, right before reigning champions, Field Marshal Montgomery. The band setup well and despite a disappointing introduction to their Number 1 MSR (Abercairney Highlanders, Susan McLeod and John Morrison of Assynt House), they went on to produce a strong strathspey and reel, with the drum corps having a fantastic run to retain the World MSR Drumming title they had lifted in 2011.

The second half of the final saw some great medleys and the band was very pleased with their performance of the Campbell’s Tartan Army set. The drum corps again had a superb run and were awarded 1st place in the medley, thereby cementing the overall drumming title in great style. The pipe corps also had a great run and with strong placings from all four judges the band finished the medley contest in 3rd place.

With all the Grade 1 results tallied up, our drum corps were announced as 2012 World Champions, with the band finishing in a close 4th place (only 2 points behind 3rd placed SFU). The overall title was retained by Field Marshal Montgomery - well done to them!

Elsewhere the Juvenile band had clearly had a boost to their confidence following their starring role at the concert hall earlier in the week and turned in their best performance of the season. Unfortunately this was only good enough for 4th place in what was a very high standard of Juvenile Grade.

The Novice band also had a good day, finishing 2nd out of 12 bands in their qualifier, before placing 9th in the final. The band will now turn it’s attention to the final championship of the season at Cowal in 10 days time with lots still to play for in the Champion of Champions tables, with the Grade 1 drum corps sitting in 1st place, the Grade 1 band in 3rd and the Juvenile band and drum corps both in 2nd place. Hope to see you there.

I am proud of each and everyone of the Boghall bandsmen, women and children. It is a pleasure and a privilege to lead the organisation with such talented and committed people around.

Well done to everyone in all 3 bands, particularly the drummers on their outstanding achievements this year.
