Grade 1 British Drum Corps Champions 2012!

Saturday 30th June saw the return of the British Championships at Annan for the third year in a row. With miserable weather once again dominating the week leading up to the championship it was expected that much of the Saturday would be washed out with rain. Thankfully this proved not to be the case with both the Novice and Juvenile bands competing in relatively dry and warm conditions.

The Grade 1 band had been focusing on delivering a top drawer performance and were looking forward to debuting one of their new 2/4 Marches in the MSR contest. They drew their Number 2 MSR; Brigadier General Ronald Cheape of Tiroran, Dora MacLeod and The Smith of Chilliechassie and were very pleased with their performance, particularly given the challenging conditions they faced when tuning up. With the only 20 minutes of rain that fell all day landing in midst of the Grade 1 band tuning up this posed a challenge that most of the other bands in the grade were fortunate to avoid. Nonetheless, the band produced a fine MSR and the drum corps were delighted to win the drumming title for the 2nd time in the last 3 years – congratulations to all of the corps! The pipers also produced a great MSR and with strong placings from all four judges the band placed 4th overall with only four points separating 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

The Juvenile band also had a very good run playing their “Heights of Dargai” medley with many saying that it was their best run of the season. The drum corps had another excellent performance and finished in a well deserved 2nd place. However, with a 6th place from one of the piping judges the band’s overall chances were limited to a disappointing 3rd place behind George Watson’s College and Dollar Academy. The Novice band also played well and will be pleased that their drum corps continued their strong run of placings over the last few years with a 4th place, with the band finishing in 9th place overall. Full results available on the RSPBA site.

All three bands will now turn their focus to the European Championships in Northern Ireland, whilst the Grade 1 band will put the finishing touches to their “Forte” concert – get your tickets here!
