Great start to season at L+B Solos and Mini Bands!

Saturday 29th March saw Boghall and Bathgate start their 2014 competition season in great form at the Lothian and Borders branch solo and mini band contest held at the James Young High School in Livingston. Last year’s contest had been a great stepping stone in helping to prepare the band for the outdoor competition season and this year’s contest has undoubtedly served the same purpose.

We were also delighted to see a number of our band members competing in the solos again and continue to be impressed at just how quickly some of our young people are progressing. Well done to all those who competed and especially to the following prizewinners:

• James Miller: 2nd Junior Solo Piping 14 years + under
• Andrew Hutton: 2nd Solo Piping 15-18 years, 2nd Solo Piping 18 years + under
• Ciaren Ross: 3rd Solo Piping 15-18 years, 3rd Solo Piping 18 years + under
• Mia Gilfillan: 4th Solo Piping 18 years + under
• Calum Watson: 1st Adult Solo Piping
• Ross Miller: 2nd Adult Solo Piping
• Jonathon Simpson: 4th Adult Solo Piping

• Lauren Thomson: 2nd Tenor Drumming 15-18 years MSR
• Stuart Williamson: 1st Adult Tenor Drumming
• Joanna Fairbairn: 2nd Adult Tenor Drumming

From a band perspective it was fantastic to see the organisation return to having bands competing in three grades. Following the great success of their first season under P/M Ali Scougall, last season’s Novice band have made the jump to the Juvenile grade and we are delighted that alongside their promotion we have been able to reintroduce a Novice Juvenile band to continue our emphasis on being a teaching organisation. Well done to all those who competed for the first time in Novice Juvenile under the leadership of instructors Ewan Sturrock and Ross Miller - both Novice mini bands produced very respectable performances and it’s astonishing to see the progress they are already making. We look forward to seeing the band competing outdoors from May onwards.

In the Juvenile grade, it was a great opportunity for our youngsters to pit themselves against the established bands of Juvenile and it was very encouraging to see them take a second for piping ahead of a number of well known Juvenile bands and to finish in third place overall - well done to P/M Ali Scougall and his team - very encouraging signs at this stage of the season!

The Grade 1 contest concluded the afternoon’s competitions and provided a great platform for the band to generate some in-house competition whilst gaining the valuable opportunity to compete in front of judges and a sizeable audience. P/M Ross Walker had the following to say:

“Wherever possible, I always look to support the Lothian and Borders branch of the RSPBA so it was pleasing to be able to enter three Grade 1 bands into the mini band competition.  Nothing focuses the mind like a competition so we were able to accelerate our preparation for the upcoming outdoor season by competing in this event.”

“It was particularly encouraging to see some of our younger and less experienced members playing so well in their respective mini-bands, with some making their debut Grade 1 contest appearance. It was also good to introduce a bit of internal rivalry between the groups as healthy competition always brings out the best in people. Suffice to say, the Pipey’s mini-band won…..this time at least, putting to rest my defeat at the same competition last year by the P/S’s mini-band!”

“I was delighted by the standard of performance from all of the groups and it has given us a great platform to raise the band up to the level that will be required to challenge for the British Championship in Bathgate, which will be our first outdoor competition of the season.”

The band can’t wait for the start of the contest season and will be working incredibly hard over the next 2 months to ensure they are ready for the start of the outdoor season. Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter accounts for all our latest news - we should have some new updates for you soon!
