Novice Juvenile win at West Lothian Highland Games, G1 Cancelled!

On Saturday 18th May, the Boghall and Bathgate Novice Juvenile and Grade 1 bands attended the West Lothian Highland Games. Both bands were greatly looking forward to this contest, with the Novice band looking to build on an excellent start to their season at Dunbar and the Grade 1 band excited to get their 2013 outdoor season underway. The forecast had looked pretty poor for most of the week and despite a relatively sunny day on Friday before the contest, the conditions on Saturday turned out to be some of the worst seen at any contest for years!

The Novice grade took place early on in the day and thankfully managed to escape the worst of the weather. With confidence high after a strong performance and result at Dunbar, the kids were clearly keen to put on another great performance and did not disappoint, producing an excellent run. Despite strong competition from a total of 11 Novice Juvenile bands, our Novice band showed just how much they have improved by taking a fantastic 1st place. This is a brilliant result and a great credit to the hard work put in by P/M Ali Scougall, Assistant P/M David Burnside, drumming tutors Tom Brown and Amanda Cook and most of all by all of the kids - well done to all of you!

With the Novice Grade completed, the heavens then well and truly opened and the whole organisation tried to find shelter under the nearest tent or gazebo! With the Grade 1 band all present and raring to go, it was a great shame to see the contest being called off and whilst the band were disappointed not to get a run out ahead of the British Championships next weekend, it was absolutely the right decision by the Lothian and Borders Branch officials - thanks to them for a sensible call. With the British Championships now only six days away, the Grade 1 band have already turned their focus back to the practice hall and can’t wait to get their competition season underway on Saturday - here’s hoping the weather improves by then!

Elsewhere, the games also managed to fit in a full solo contest before the weather deteriorated and we were delighted to see some of our soloists collecting prizes - well done to Harry Richards for winning the Juvenile contest overall (with a 1st in the March and 1st in the Piobaireachd) and to Novice P/M, Ali Scougall for a 3rd in the adult Strathspey and Reel.
