Strong start for Novice band at Dunbar.

On Saturday 11th May the Boghall and Bathgate Novice Juvenile band travelled east to Dunbar for their first outdoor contest of the season. This was the first opportunity for our youngsters to compete as a full band under the leadership of P/M Ali Scougall who took over from Alvis Kerr during the winter.

Despite testing conditions including strong winds, intermittent rain and a temperature around 5 degrees, the band demonstrated just how much they have improved with an an excellent run in the Novice grade. They were delighted to end up 2nd behind local rivals, George Watson’s College and it was particularly encouraging to take a 1st and 2nd place for piping, especially given the impressive standard of novice bands in attendance.

Later in the day, the band also played up to the Juvenile grade placing 4th overall and taking two 3rds for piping in the process.

Well done to all involved and especially to P/M Ali Scougall, asst P/M David Burnside and drumming tutors, Tom Brown and Amanda Cook. We now look forward to the next contest of the season at the West Lothian Highland Games this Saturday where the Grade 1 band will get their outdoor season underway. Look forward to seeing you there!
